Choosing sensitive baby wipes
- Fragrance-free wipes: perfume is a common cause of skin irritation and nappy rash, so unscented is safest.
- Alcohol-free: alcohol dries and stings delicate skin.
- Water wipes: contain mostly purified water with very few ingredients, a good choice for newborns and babies with eczema.
- Thicker wipes: fewer wipes per change, which can balance a higher price.
Wipes for newborns
Many doctors and midwives suggest using cotton wool and plain warm water for the first few weeks, when a newborn's skin is most delicate. If you prefer wipes, choose water-based, fragrance-free ones. Pat the skin dry before putting on a fresh nappy.
Wipes and nappy rash
If your baby develops nappy rash, switch to plain water or water wipes, allow some nappy-free time, and use a barrier cream at each change. See a doctor if the rash has blisters or pus, spreads beyond the nappy area, or does not improve within a few days.
Don't flush wipes
Even wipes labelled "flushable" do not break down like toilet paper and can block pipes and drains. Throw used wipes in the bin.
Wipe dispenser and travel wipes
A wipe dispenser with a tight lid keeps wipes moist, which matters in hot weather when packs dry out quickly once opened. Travel wipes packs fit in a bag for outings. Store unopened packs away from direct sun, and use opened packs within a few weeks.
Wipes beyond the nappy
Gentle, fragrance-free wipes are also handy for cleaning hands and faces when you are out, but wash hands with soap and water whenever you can. Avoid using baby wipes around the eyes, and keep packs out of reach of babies and toddlers, who may put wipes in their mouths.
Water-based wipes have a shorter shelf life once opened, so buy pack sizes you will use within a few weeks, especially in the hot months.
