A medicine specialist (physician) looks after adults with illnesses that do not need surgery. In Bangladesh, a medicine specialist usually holds an FCPS (Medicine), MD (Internal Medicine) or MRCP, and is often the first specialist a patient sees when the cause of a problem is not yet clear.
Medicine specialists manage fever, diabetes, high blood pressure, infections and many long-term conditions, and refer patients to the right sub-specialist (cardiologist, neurologist, nephrologist and others) when needed. For many families, a trusted medicine specialist is the doctor they return to year after year.
