Choose an alcohol hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol

Health authorities recommend hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol, either ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol-free products based on benzalkonium chloride are gentler on skin but may not work as well against some germs. Check the active ingredient on the label, not just the front of the bottle.

To use it properly, apply enough to cover all surfaces of both hands, then rub the palms, the backs of the hands, between the fingers and the fingertips until dry, which takes about 20 seconds.

When soap and water are better

Hand sanitizer gel does not remove dirt, grease or some germs well. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when your hands are visibly dirty, after using the toilet, before preparing food, after handling raw meat or fish, and when caring for someone with diarrhoea.

Products to avoid

Do not buy sanitizers that list methanol (methyl alcohol), which is toxic through the skin and if swallowed, and avoid products with unclear labels or no manufacturer details. Some sanitizers have been recalled for methanol contamination, so buying from a known brand matters.

Hand sanitizer for kids

Supervise young children when they use sanitizer, and have them rub until their hands are dry. Swallowing even small amounts can cause alcohol poisoning, so choose bottles with a pump or flip cap and store them out of reach. Scented or brightly coloured gels can tempt children to taste them.

Sanitizer price in BD and ordering from abroad

Alcohol-based sanitizers are flammable, so many cannot be shipped internationally by air; wipes and alcohol-free products are sometimes easier to ship. Local brands in Bangladesh are often the practical choice for everyday use. Whatever you buy, use the sanitizer before its expiry date, and keep it away from heat and flames.
