Electric heating pad or microwavable pack?

  • Electric heating pads give steady heat for as long as you need, with adjustable settings. Choose one with automatic shut-off.
  • Microwavable heating pads need no socket during use and mould to the neck or shoulders, but cool down after 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Hot water bottles are simple and widely available; use a cover and never fill with boiling water.

Heating pad for back pain and stiff muscles

Heat therapy is useful for ongoing muscle stiffness and back pain, and helps you move more comfortably, which is part of recovery. For a fresh injury with swelling, such as a sprain in the first two days, use cold instead. See a doctor for back pain after a fall, or with numbness, leg weakness, fever, or problems controlling the bladder or bowels.

Heating pad for period pain

Warmth on the lower abdomen relaxes the womb muscles and can ease menstrual cramps; studies suggest it can work about as well as common painkillers for many women. Very heavy or severely painful periods should be checked by a doctor.

Using heat safely

Never fall asleep on an electric heating pad, and limit each session to 20 minutes. Place a layer of cloth between the pad and your skin. People with diabetes, nerve damage or poor circulation, and young children, may not feel burns developing, so use low heat with extra care or ask a doctor first. Don't use creams such as menthol rubs under a heating pad.

Voltage for electric heating pads

Most electric heating pads made for the US run on 110–120V and are not designed for Bangladesh's 220V supply. Choose a pad rated for 220–240V, or a microwavable pack, which avoids the issue entirely.

For children, use a warm (not hot) pack for short periods only, with an adult checking the skin, and never let a child sleep with a heating pad.
