Blood Pressure Monitors

Measuring blood pressure at home gives you and your doctor a clearer picture than a single reading at the clinic. This page lists blood pressure monitors available on Amazon, including upper arm and wrist models. High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms, so a reliable home blood pressure machine is worth having if you have hypertension, diabetes or kidney disease, or a family history of heart problems.

Upper arm or wrist blood pressure monitor?

Doctors and heart associations recommend an upper arm blood pressure monitor for most people because it gives more reliable readings. A wrist blood pressure monitor is smaller and handy for travel, but the reading changes if your wrist is not held at heart level. Choose a wrist model only if an upper arm cuff does not fit or is uncomfortable.

Choose a validated blood pressure monitor

Not every digital BP machine has been tested for accuracy. Before you buy, look the model up on an independent list of validated devices, such as STRIDE BP or validatebp.org.

Get the right cuff size

A cuff that is too small gives falsely high readings, and one that is too large gives low readings. Measure around the middle of your upper arm and compare it with the cuff range in the listing; large-arm cuffs are available for many models.

How to measure correctly

  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported, feet flat on the floor and legs uncrossed.
  • Rest your arm on a table with the cuff on bare skin at heart level.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand.
  • Take two readings one minute apart and note both, or use a monitor with memory.

If your home readings are often 130/80 mmHg or higher, discuss them with your doctor. A reading of 180/120 mmHg or higher together with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness or trouble speaking needs emergency care.

Ordering a blood pressure machine to Bangladesh

Most home monitors run on AA batteries, so US voltage is not a problem; if a model uses a mains adapter, check that it accepts 100–240V. Selecting Bangladesh as the delivery address shows whether a monitor is eligible for shipping here and what import charges apply.
