Muscle Stimulators and Accessories

Electrical muscle stimulator devices send small electrical pulses through pads on the skin. This page lists TENS units for pain relief, EMS muscle stimulator devices, wireless TENS models and replacement electrode pads available on Amazon. Before buying, it helps to know which type does what and who should avoid them.

TENS unit or EMS muscle stimulator?

  • TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation): stimulates nerves to reduce the feeling of pain. Some people find it helpful for back pain, period pain, arthritis and nerve pain, although research results are mixed.
  • EMS (electrical muscle stimulation): makes muscles contract. Physiotherapists use it in rehabilitation, for example after surgery. Ab-toning belts that promise a six-pack without exercise do not deliver meaningful results.

Many home devices combine both modes.

Using a TENS unit for back pain

Place the pads on either side of the painful area, never directly over the spine, and start at the lowest intensity, increasing until you feel a strong but comfortable tingling. Sessions of 20 to 30 minutes are typical. TENS works best alongside exercise and other treatments your doctor or physiotherapist recommends.

Who should not use a muscle stimulator

Do not use these devices if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other implanted electronic device, or if you have epilepsy (on the head or neck), heart problems, or are pregnant, unless your doctor approves. Never place pads on the front or sides of the neck, across the chest, on the head, over broken or numb skin, or over a known blood clot.

Electrode pads and power

Self-adhesive electrode pads lose their stickiness over time; keep them on their plastic sheet and replace them when they no longer stick firmly, as poor contact can irritate the skin. Wireless TENS and most portable units charge by USB, so they work anywhere. Check that replacement pads fit your device's connector before you order.

Keep the device away from children, never use it while driving or in water, and stop if you feel pain, burning or skin irritation under the pads.

A TENS unit is best seen as one part of pain management; if pain is new, severe or getting worse, get it diagnosed rather than masking it with stimulation.
