Digestive Supplements

Bloating, constipation, gas and indigestion are common, and many people look for digestive supplements to help. This page lists digestive supplements available on Amazon, including fiber supplement powders and capsules, psyllium husk, digestive enzymes, lactase tablets and probiotics. Below we explain which ones have real evidence behind them.

Fiber supplement and psyllium husk

Psyllium husk, known in Bangladesh as isabgol (ishabgul), is one of the best-studied fibres. It softens stools for constipation, can firm them in mild diarrhoea and helps lower cholesterol slightly. Start with a small dose, increase slowly over a week or two to limit gas, and drink a full glass of water with each dose. Take other medicines at least two hours apart, because fibre can reduce their absorption. Local isabgol husk is inexpensive and works just as well as imported capsules.

Digestive enzymes and lactase

Lactase tablets help people who are lactose intolerant digest milk and dairy. General digestive enzymes have little evidence for everyday bloating in healthy people; prescription enzymes are used for specific conditions such as pancreatic problems.

Probiotics

Certain probiotic strains can reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and may help some people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Results depend on the strain, so pick a product that names its strains and has evidence for your symptom. See our probiotics section for more detail.

Other options

Peppermint oil capsules have some evidence for IBS symptoms. Ginger can ease mild nausea. For gas in children, ask a paediatrician before using any product, and never give adult supplements to children.

When digestive symptoms need a doctor

See a doctor if you notice blood in your stool or black stools, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or a lasting change in bowel habits, especially if you are over 50. Ongoing heartburn or indigestion should also be checked rather than masked with supplements.

Simple daily habits also make a big difference: regular meal times, eating slowly, staying active and drinking enough water, which is especially important in hot weather.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking regular medicines, check with your doctor before starting any digestive supplement.
