Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are multivitamins designed for women who are trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding. Their most important ingredient is folic acid, which greatly lowers the risk of serious birth defects of the brain and spine when taken before and in early pregnancy. This page lists prenatal vitamins available on Amazon, including tablets, gummies and prenatal vitamins with DHA.

Start folic acid before pregnancy

The neural tube, which becomes the baby's brain and spine, forms in the first weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. That is why health authorities recommend at least 400 mcg of folic acid every day for any woman who could become pregnant, starting at least one month before conception and continuing through early pregnancy. Some women need a higher dose prescribed by a doctor, for example those with diabetes, epilepsy or obesity, or a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect.

What to look for in prenatal vitamins

  • Folic acid or methylfolate: at least 400 mcg, often listed as 680 mcg DFE.
  • Iron: needed for the extra blood volume in pregnancy. Anaemia is common among pregnant women in Bangladesh, and your doctor may prescribe a separate iron tablet.
  • Iodine: about 150 mcg for the baby's brain development; not every prenatal vitamin includes it.
  • DHA (omega-3): supports the baby's brain and eyes, and is often sold as a separate softgel or in a two-pill pack.
  • Vitamin A: should come mainly as beta-carotene; avoid high doses of preformed vitamin A (retinol) in pregnancy.
  • Vitamin D and calcium: support bone health; calcium is usually only partly covered and may need diet changes or a separate supplement.

Tablets or gummies?

Gummy prenatal vitamins are easier to take with morning sickness, but they often contain no iron and less of other nutrients. If one large tablet makes you feel sick, try taking it with dinner or at bedtime.

Prenatal vitamins in Bangladesh: talk to your doctor

Antenatal clinics in Bangladesh often prescribe iron and folic acid tablets, and sometimes calcium. Show your doctor any prenatal vitamin you plan to take so you do not double up on iron or vitamin A. If you buy online, make sure the product can be delivered to Bangladesh and will arrive well before you need it, and check the expiry date on arrival.
