Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium for strong bones and supports the muscles and immune system. Your skin makes it in sunlight, yet vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common in Bangladesh, especially among women, office workers and older adults who spend most of the day indoors. This page lists vitamin D supplements on Amazon: vitamin D3 softgels and capsules, tablets, gummies, liquid drops and D3 with K2 combinations.

Vitamin D3 or D2?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) raises blood levels more effectively than D2 (ergocalciferol) for most people, so most supplements now use D3. Vegetarians and vegans should check the source, because D3 is usually made from lanolin (sheep's wool); plant-based D3 made from lichen is also available.

How much vitamin D? Understanding IU and mcg

Labels show vitamin D in international units (IU), micrograms (mcg) or both: 1 mcg equals 40 IU. The recommended intake for most adults is 600 to 800 IU (15 to 20 mcg) a day, and 4,000 IU (100 mcg) a day is the usual upper limit for adults unless a doctor prescribes more. High-dose products of 5,000 to 50,000 IU are meant for treating a diagnosed deficiency under medical supervision; taking them long-term without testing can raise calcium to harmful levels.

Vitamin D capsules, drops or gummies?

  • Softgels and vitamin D capsules: usually contain D3 in oil, which helps absorption. Take them with a meal that contains some fat.
  • Drops: easy for babies and children, but check the dose per drop carefully.
  • Gummies: convenient but contain sugar, and must be stored out of children's reach.

Vitamin D3 with K2

Some products combine D3 with vitamin K2 (usually MK-7), which is involved in directing calcium to the bones. Research on the benefit of the combination is still limited. If you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, do not take vitamin K supplements without your doctor's advice.

Vitamin D supplement in Bangladesh: test first

A simple blood test (25-hydroxy vitamin D) shows whether you are deficient, and many diagnostic centres in Bangladesh offer it. Your doctor can then suggest the right dose and how long to take it. If you order online, confirm the product ships to Bangladesh and compare the landed cost with local brands of the same strength, check the expiry date on arrival and keep the bottle away from heat.
