Zinc oxide cream or ointment?

  • Zinc oxide cream and paste: forms a thick white barrier between the skin and wetness. Higher zinc percentages (around 40%) suit an existing rash; lower strengths suit daily prevention.
  • Petrolatum ointment: a clear, protective layer that is easy to apply and remove, good for everyday prevention.
  • Natural barrier creams: may contain shea butter or plant oils; avoid products with fragrance or essential oils, which can irritate.

How to prevent and treat nappy rash

  1. Change nappies often, as soon as they are wet or dirty.
  2. Clean gently with water or fragrance-free wipes, and pat dry rather than rubbing.
  3. Give some nappy-free time each day to let the skin breathe.
  4. Apply a thick layer of diaper rash cream at every change. You don't need to scrub off all the old cream; just remove the soiled layer.

Avoid talcum powder, which can be breathed in by the baby, and don't use adult medicated creams unless a doctor advises.

When a diaper rash needs a doctor

A bright red rash in the skin folds with small red spots around the edges may be a yeast (candida) infection, which needs an antifungal cream. See a doctor if the rash has blisters, open sores, pus or yellow crusts; spreads beyond the nappy area; comes with fever; or does not improve after two to three days of good care.

Keep a travel size diaper rash cream handy

A small tube in the changing bag means you can apply cream on outings and long journeys. In hot weather, store creams out of direct sun, as they can separate in the heat.

For cloth nappies, wash with a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly, as soap residue can irritate the skin.

Choose diaper creams without boric acid, fragrance or dyes, and check the expiry date before use.
