A simple skin care routine

  1. Cleanse: a gentle face cleanser morning and night. Gel or foaming cleansers suit oily skin; cream cleansers suit dry skin.
  2. Treat: an optional face serum for a specific concern.
  3. Moisturise: a light gel moisturiser in humid weather, a richer cream in dry winter months.
  4. Protect: a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or more every morning, even on cloudy days.

Choosing a face serum

  • Niacinamide: helps oiliness, redness and uneven tone; well tolerated.
  • Vitamin C: an antioxidant that can brighten dull skin and fade dark spots over time.
  • Retinoids (retinol, adapalene): help acne and signs of ageing but can irritate at first; start two or three nights a week. Avoid retinoids during pregnancy.
  • AHA and BHA (glycolic, salicylic acid): exfoliate; salicylic acid is useful for blackheads. Use with sunscreen, as they make skin more sun-sensitive.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: effective for acne spots; it can bleach towels and clothes.

Introduce one new product at a time and patch test on the jaw or inner arm first.

Beware of skin-lightening creams

Some skin-lightening and "fairness" creams sold informally in South Asia have been found to contain mercury or strong steroids, which can damage the skin, kidneys and nerves. Avoid products without full ingredient lists, and see a dermatologist for melasma or stubborn dark patches.

Face mask products

Clay masks absorb oil for oily skin, while hydrating sheet masks give a temporary boost to dry skin. They are a treat, not a necessity. See a dermatologist for painful or scarring acne, rashes that won't settle, or any spot that changes, bleeds or doesn't heal.

Drink enough water, get enough sleep and don't pick spots: these habits matter as much as any product.

In Bangladesh's humidity, oily and combination skin is common; gel moisturisers and non-comedogenic products are less likely to cause breakouts.
