What to look for in a body sunscreen

• Broad spectrum: protects against both UVA (ageing and pigmentation) and UVB (burning).
• SPF 30 or higher for daily use, and SPF 50 for long hours outdoors.
• Water resistant sunscreen (40 or 80 minutes) for swimming, sport or heavy sweating; reapply after that time or after towelling off.
• Texture: light lotions and gels suit hot, humid weather, and richer creams suit dry skin.

Physical sunscreen or chemical?

A physical (mineral) sunscreen uses zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to block UV rays. It is gentle on sensitive skin and suitable for children, though older formulas can leave a white cast. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, feel lighter and rub in more easily. Both work when used correctly.

How much sunscreen to apply

Most people use too little. An adult needs about 30 ml, a full shot glass, to cover the body, applied 15 minutes before going out and reapplied every two hours and after swimming or sweating. A body lotion with SPF used as a daily moisturiser is fine for short periods outdoors, but use a dedicated sunscreen for longer sun exposure. Don't forget the ears, the back of the neck, the tops of the feet and the backs of the hands.

Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection: shade in the middle of the day, a wide-brimmed hat and loose, long-sleeved clothing all help too.

Sun protection for brown skin

Brown skin burns less easily, but it still gets UV damage, and sun exposure makes dark spots and uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation) worse. A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen helps. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun rather than covered in sunscreen.
