Visiting a hospital: what to expect

For a routine consultation, most hospitals run an outpatient department (OPD) in the morning and specialist chambers in the afternoon and evening. Patients usually buy an outpatient ticket or book a serial for a named doctor in advance; serials for popular specialists often fill up a day or more ahead, so it helps to call early.

Bring your previous prescriptions, test reports and a list of the medicines you are currently taking. If you have had X-rays, ultrasound or blood tests elsewhere, the doctor at the hospital may accept them and save you repeating the test, as long as they are recent.

For admission, keep a national ID card (or birth certificate for children), the referring doctor's note and an attendant who can stay with the patient. Ask the admission desk about bed or cabin charges and the deposit before admission, as these vary widely between hospitals.

In an emergency such as chest pain, breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, a stroke or a serious injury, go directly to the emergency department of the nearest hospital that can treat it and call 999 for help. Do not wait for a serial.
